I thought I'd post this brief message covering the items in the subject; in the release version there will be a brief tutorial comes up and explains these things, but since that's not in the beta, perhaps this little introduction will be useful!
What is WindowZones?
WindowZones is a program that lets you control, on an application by application basis, which programs have "administrative" authority on your system. Administrative authority means a program is able to read or write to any file on your computer. It can change your operating system settings, format hard drives, install new software and drivers, put things in the system startup, and basically do anything on your computer it wants.
Why Do You Need WindowZones?
Clearly, the programs you use to connect to the Internet such as Internet Explorer, Outlook, Messenger, and so on do not need such powerful rights. But since most of us run our PCs by logging in with an account that has administrator rights, even program you run also has them by default. And that's why viruses, spyware, and adware can do so much damage: once they get past your first line of defense, such as your firewall, they have free reign to do whatever they want!
WindowZones prevents programs that you specify (such as those you use to connect to the Internet, which are at the greatest risk) from getting or using administrator powers. So, when you run Internet Explorer, it operates essentially exactly as it did before, but if a worm or virus or spyware download comes in from the Internet, it can't do certain types of damage.
In essence, WindowZones gives you a "safe place" to run your Internet applications: we call that place the Safe Zone
What To Do After Installing WindowZones
As soon as you install it, WindowZones covers the most common Internet programs. When you first run WindowZones, it will create a few default rules that say:
"When Outlook runs, place it in the SafeZone" "When Internet Explorer runs, place it in the SafeZone"
So by and large, once you install it, you're protected, and there's nothing else to do!
If you have other Internet-facing applications, you can create rules for them as well on the "Rules" page of WindowZones.
